India to revise food safety and standard alcoholic beverages regulations

On 20 May 2022, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued CG-DL-E-18052022-235825 for proposed amendments to the Food Safety standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations with a feedback period of 60 days.  The main amendments are as follows:

(1) Clause (I), section 2.8.1 of Part 2 of the original Food Safety Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations 2018 should be replaced by "(I) Single malt whisky or single grain whisky:  Single malt or single grain whisky is distillate obtained from fermented mash using malted barley or malt/unsprouted grain separately, distilled only in a pot and produced in a single distillery";  

(2) Replace section 5.5 in Part 5 with "5.5 The label of alcoholic beverages shall not contain any nutritional information other than calorie content.  Such declarations relating to energy content should be voluntary ".
