Turkey issues new guidelines for assessing the safety of novel food ingredients and managing health claims

On July 19, 2022, the General Administration for Food Safety and Control of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Turkey issued notice No. 477 on its website, namely the Guidelines for the Management of Novel Food Ingredients Safety Assessment and Health Claims. The main contents include:

(1) General principles, assessment institutions, application procedures and safety documents and scientific information to be provided, assessment methods and verification procedures for substances used as novel food ingredients;

(2) The types of health claims that the substances approved as new food ingredients can be used conditionally, including 6 categories such as anti-oxidation, improving immune function, increasing appetite or weight control, maintaining bone, nerve, muscle and skin health, and improving nervous system function.

The guidelines come into force from the date of publication in the Government Gazette.
