On 26 July 2022, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued Notice No.STD/SP-18/T (VeganFoods), Guidelines for the Application of Vegetarian Label.
The main contents are as follows:
(1) The food business operator shall submit the application for vegetarian label to the relevant licensing authority. The application form shall refer to Table A of this Guide, and the necessary information shall be provided in the format specified by the competent authority;
(2) The imported vegetarian products should be accompanied by a "Certificate of Approval for the Use of the Vegetarian Label" issued by the exporting country's accreditation authority. The certificate format template is Table B of this Guide;
(3) If a food business operator finds that an approved vegetarian food may be harmful to health or does not comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Vegetarian Food) Regulations 2022, the food business operator shall immediately suspend the production, import or sale of the food and issue a recall notice under the supervision of the Food Safety Administration.
The guidelines are effective from the date of publication.
