On December 14, 2022, the U.S. Federal Register reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued Announcement No. 2022-27040 to revise the yogurt standard.
The main contents include: 1. If flavorings containing fat ingredients are added to yogurt containing modified milk fat, the product name can add terms reflecting nutrient content claims or related to the nature of flavorings before "yogurt"; 2. If vitamin D in yogurt is fortified, its content should not be lower than 10% of the daily recommended intake, and at the same time not higher than the limit of good manufacturing practice; 3. Yogurt with a milk fat content of less than 2.44% is regarded as a modified food; 4. For yogurt with a milk fat content between 2.44% and 3.25%, the actual milk fat content should be indicated on the label, and the font height should not be less than one-eighth of an inch in any case.
The announcement will be officially published in the Federal Register on December 15, 2022, and will take effect 30 days later, with a transition period until January 1, 2024.
