On December 7, 2022, the European Commission website released the Ares (2022) No. 8490385 consultation document, which intends to amend Annex II and VIII of Regulation (EU) No. 2018/848, that is, the production rules of organic salt and other edible salts, and the feedback period as of January 4, 2023.
The main revisions are as follows:
(1) For organic edible salt, the edible salt produced in accordance with the requirements of VIII of Annex II accounts for more than 50% of the dry matter; all ingredients added to the salt are organic;
(2) Part VIII is added: general requirements for the production of organic salts. It should be obtained from oceans, rock salt mines, natural brine or salt lakes, and should not be synthesized by chemical reactions or made from wastewater from chemical industry, seawater desalination plants, potash fertilizers; the production process prevents or reduces environmental pollution and pollutants of organic nature; relevant preventive measures should be taken during production process to prevent the salt from being contaminated and relevant records should be kept; non-organic salts should not be labeled as organic salts and placed on the market;
(3) Specific requirements for salt production and preparation. Prohibited mining and processing methods (explosive mining of salt mines, etc.); additives and processing aids shall not be used in the preparation of organic salts; minerals shall not be added to edible salt except iodine; cleaning and disinfection record requirements during production, etc.
