South Korea released the first precision inspection project for imported livestock products in 2023

On December 30, 2022, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drugs (MFDS) released the first precision inspection project for imported livestock products in 2023. The products involved mainly include ice fruits, edible oils and fats, special foods, processed meat products, processed eggs, oil products, etc.  The precise inspection items mainly include:


(1) Ice cream (5 types): milk fat, bacterial count (excluding products containing lactic acid bacteria and fermented milk products), coliform bacteria, lactic acid bacterial count (only for products containing lactic acid bacteria), Listeria monocystis;


(2) Edible tallow (8 types): specific gravity, refractive index, moisture, unsaponifiable matter, acid value, saponification, iodine value, antioxidant;


(3) Infant formula milk (46 types): calories, moisture (except liquid products), crude protein, crude fat, linolenic acid, a-linolenic acid, ratio of linolenic acid to a-linolenic acid, carbohydrates, oily components, Vitamin A and other 46 kinds;


(4) Ham. Nitrite, tar pigment, preservatives, bacteria count (only for sterilized products), Escherichia coli (only for raw ham), coliform bacteria (only for sterilized products), Salmonella (only for sterilized products or products for direct consumption ), Listeriamonas (limited to sterilized products or products for direct consumption), Staphylococcus aureus (limited to sterilized products or products for direct consumption);


(5) Thick cream fermented oil (7 types): non-fat milk solids, milk fat, lactic acid bacteria or yeast count, coliform bacteria, salmonella, listeria monas, staphylococcus aureus;


(6) Meat and processed meat products (14 types such as ham), including ham (ham, luncheon meat, raw ham), sausage fat (sausage, mixed sausage, fermented sausage), bacon, processed meat products, Dry storage meat, seasoned meat (seasoned meat, natural packaging, crushed processed meat products, ribs processed products), simple meat cooking set, detection of 139 kinds of animal residues such as amoxicillin. The number of inspection items varies depending on the breed of livestock (meat) such as cattle, pigs, and chicken.


The detailed inspection project notice will be implemented from January 1, 2023.
