On May 1, 2023, the website of Washington State University reported that the university had recently obtained authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use gene-edited pork to make German-style sausages for public consumption. The FDA authorization is research and currently limited to these specific gene-edited pigs, but he shows that gene-editing livestock to rapidly produce desirable traits is a viable strategy for addressing the demands of a growing population.

The FDA has approved the entry of a gene-edited short-haired cow into the food chain, which has been genetically edited to significantly enhance the animal's adaptability to high temperatures.
