Japan revised a number of food additives detection methods standards

On October 23, 2023, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan (MHLW) issued the Announcement 1023 No.2, revising and formulating a number of standards for the detection of additives in food. The main contents include:


(1) To formulate the detection method standard for potassium ferrocyanide content in food, applicable to wine, the specific method is spectrophotometry, and the detection limit is 0.0005g/l for white wine and 0.0006g/l for red wine;


(2) To formulate standards for the determination of copper salt food additives (copper sulfate, copper gluconate, copper chlorophyll) content in food, specifically atomic absorption spectrometry; The limit of quantitation is 0.0002g/l for liquid milk and wine, 0.001g/kg for other foods;


(3) Revision of sucralose content detection methods in food, specifically involving changes in reagents and sample preparation methods; Revision of three kinds of antioxidant content detection methods in food, such as butyl hydroxytoluene, specifically for the revision of the English abbreviation of the substance tested.

 

The announcement takes effect from the date of publication, and the standard for the detection of copper salt additives in food becomes effective on October 22, 2024.
