On 19 January 2024, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) issued Announcement No. 9 of 2024, announcing that with immediate effect, the import of Belgian bell peppers meeting the relevant requirements is permitted. Sweet pepper in this announcement refers to the fruit of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum or Capsicum grossum) grown and processed (sorted or packed) in Belgium.

The sweet pepper planting bases and packaging plants for export to China shall be audited and recorded by the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain of the Kingdom of Belgium (hereinafter referred to as the Belgian side) and approved for registration by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the Chinese side). The registration information shall include name, address, product and registration number for accurate traceability in case the sweet peppers exported to China do not comply with the relevant provisions of this announcement. At the same time, the announcement also lists in detail the relevant requirements to be met for import, including phytosanitary certificate requirements, packaging requirements and so on.
