Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Canberra hopes to agree on the eventual lifting of restrictions on Australian wine imports during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's upcoming visit to Australia.

Responding to a reporter's question about the state of Australia-China relations, the Australian prime minister said: "We are making significant progress in removing existing barriers to trade between our two countries... Wine exports to China exceed $1.1 billion a year. That means Australia stands to gain enormously if [the restrictions] are lifted. As I said, I believe that will happen. "

The Chinese government imposed anti-dumping measures on wine imports from Australia on November 28, 2020. An investigation by China's Ministry of Commerce found that Australian producers had engaged in dumping practices that harmed the interests of Chinese companies. According to the decision, tariffs ranging from 107.1% to 212.1% will be imposed on wine products from Australia.

China was once Australia's largest market for wine exports. By the end of 2019, Australian wineries had exported about $900 million worth of wine to China.
