Singapore proposed regulations for specified foods and their pre-market clearance

On 15 March 2024, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued a consultation paper to seek views on draft regulations for specified foods and their pre-market approval. The main elements of the draft include:

 

(1) Terms and definitions (specified food means: a new food or a food containing an ingredient of such a new food for which pre-market approval has not been granted; a genetically modified food or a food containing an ingredient of such a genetically modified food for which pre-market approval has not been granted; and any form of insect or a food containing an ingredient of an insect);

 

(2) Specific food products imported or domestically produced in Singapore must obtain an official licence before they can be marketed;

 

(3) The company applying for the licence must provide relevant supporting documents for official verification of the safety of the food concerned;

 

(4) The competent authority in Singapore will conduct a centralised assessment of specific food permit applications once every 2 months. The regulations will be part of Singapore's Food Safety and Security Bill, and the feedback period for the draft is up to 14 May 2024.
