On June 7, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a review of the Radiation Requirements for Food Production, Processing, and Handling, with a deadline of 30 days after publication in the Federal Register.

In order to ensure the safety of the use of radiation sources, the FDA requires that the radiation source label should contain accurate information about the radiation source and the maximum (or minimum and maximum) energy values of the radiation. The relevant labels shall indicate the installation and use method of the radiation source, state the maximum allowable radiation dose, indicate the relevant radiation icon and radiation declaration. When food processors use radiation technology to treat food, they should stipulate and guarantee the expected shelf life of the relevant products up to 3 years, and specify the requirements for radiation process records. The records can be used to assess compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and to establish safety limits for the use of radiation techniques in food handling. Inspection records are the only way to determine whether the company concerned meets the requirements for handling food with ionizing radiation.
