A third of U.S. pistachio exports went to China, up 90 percent from a year earlier

The Administrative Committee for Pistachios released the pistachio Industry Inventory and Shipment report for the 2023/24 quarter (September 2023 to August 2024), showing that shipments of pistachios in the United States reached a record high in the 2023/24 quarter. The total was 1,181,059,020 pounds, up 31% from the previous season's 901,627,301 pounds. Of this total, 931,018,952 pounds were sold to overseas markets, an increase of 43% compared to 652,483,851 pounds in the previous quarter. Exports accounted for 78% of total shipments in the 2023/24 quarter, up 6% from the previous production season.

 

Of the pistachios exported from the United States, the open shell accounted for 847,814,159 pounds, or 91 percent; Closed shell fruit was 29,089,004 pounds, or 3%; Machine open fruit was 11,733,358 pounds, or 1%; Kernels were 42,382,431 pounds, or 5%.

 

China remained the largest export destination for U.S. pistachios, importing more than 307 million pounds in the 2023/24 season, representing 33% of total U.S. exports for the entire season and a 90% jump from 162 million pounds in the 2022/23 season. Among several types of pistachios, the largest increase in Chinese imports was open-shell fruit, which increased by 112% from 139,187,118 pounds in 2022/23 to 294,790,063 pounds; The increase in nut imports was even more impressive, from 583,149 pounds to 1,450,171 pounds, a 148% increase. At the same time, the import of closed shell fruit and machine open fruit decreased.

 

The top 10 export markets for American pistachios also include Germany, Turkey, Spain, Vietnam, India and other countries, with exports to the top 10 markets accounting for 74% of its total exports, totaling 685,921,907 pounds. Although Turkey is also a major producer of pistachios, for the third year in a row, Turkey is the leading global export destination for U.S. pistachios.

 

The U.S. pistachio industry had 163 million pounds of inventory carried forward from the 2022/23 season, of which 110 million pounds were open shell fruit. Combined with the 1.492 billion pounds of crop harvested in 2023, the total stock for the 2023/24 season is about 1.66 billion pounds. The industry is now heading into the 2024/25 season with 184 million pounds of carry-over inventory, including 102 million pounds of open shell fruit.
