On November 18, 2024, Health Canada issued a document approving the use of genetically modified soybean strain MON 94637 for food.

In 2023, Health Canada received an application to allow the marketing of food products derived from a new soybean variety, the genetically modified soybean strain MON 94637, which is resistant to lepidopteran pests found in South American countries.

In order to determine whether this genetically modified soybean variety could be marketed as a food product in Canada, Health Canada scientists conducted a scientific assessment to ensure that it was safe for consumption.

As a result of the evaluation, it was determined that the changes made to this new soy variety would not pose a greater risk to human health than the soy varieties currently on the Canadian market. In addition, Health Canada concluded that the new soy variety would have no impact on allergies and that the nutritional value of this soy variety did not differ from other traditional soy varieties available for consumption.
