Recently, the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) amended the conditions of approval for the active substance flonicamid. Flonicamid is an insecticide used to control aphids in potatoes, wheat, apples, pears and peaches. In accordance with Regulation 1107/2009, the HSE regulates applications for amendments to the approval of active substances.

ISK Biosciences Europe N.V., as the applicant, has had its application for an amendment to the approval of flonicamid examined by the HSE, which stated in its conclusions published on October 11, 2024, that the active substance is expected to meet the criteria for approval following the implementation of the acute reference dose (ARfD) values proposed to be amended. The risk assessment has previously been subject to public consultation.

The HSE has submitted its conclusions and decision of intent to the competent UK authorities in accordance with agency agreements with Defra and the respective devolved administrations. The final decision allows flonicamid to remain approved in the UK for use in plant protection products and the ARfD has been amended. The conditions of approval for flonicamid have now been updated on the UK Register of Approved Pesticides and plant protection products containing flonicamid can be authorized in the UK in accordance with the requirements of Regulation 1107/2009.
