US Formulates Labeling of Meat or Poultry Products Comprised of or Containing Cultured Animal Cells

 
On September 2, 2021, United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued Announcement No. 2021-19057 to formulate Labeling of Meat or Poultry Products Comprised of or Containing Cultured Animal Cells. The main contents of this regulation are:

(1) Meat and poultry products that are intended to contain animal cell cultured ingredients (cells must be derived from animal species specified by the Federal Meat and Poultry Inspection Law) should be specially marked on the label, stating that they contain animal cell cultured ingredients, and indicate the type and location of the cell source animal, and the content of the culture ingredients;

(2) The label of this type of product should be approved by The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) for label before the products are used in commerce;

(3) FSIS will check and verify the conformity and authenticity of the product label.

The announcement was officially published in the Federal Register on September 3, 2021, and the feedback period is 60 days.
