Japan publishes soy-based imitation meat foods standard

On February 24, 2022, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries issued the "Standard for Soy-based Imitation Meat Foods" (Standard No. JAS0019-2022). The main contents of the standard include the definition of soy-based imitation meat foods (foods that use soybean as the main raw material, and the final product has meat characteristics, the soybean protein content shall not be less than 10%), production process requirements, and regulations on raw and auxiliary materials allowed to be added to the product (Other plant-based ingredients other than soybeans, starch, salt, oil, food additives, etc. can be added, and other animal-based ingredients other than eggs and milk are not allowed), product labeling requirements (for example, "This product is not meat" should be marked in a prominent position on the package or container). This standard is implemented from the date of publication.
