The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking significant steps to ensure the supply of infant formula products, according to the FDA.
To ensure the milk powder supply on the market, FDA will take the following measures:
· Meet regularly with major infant formula manufacturers to better understand their capacity to increase production of various infant formula and medical foods;
· Speed up the review of manufacturing change notifications to help manufacturers bring safe products to market, especially in case of special formulations for medical needs;
· Monitor the supply situation of infant formula using the agency's 21 Forward food supply chain continuity system in conjunction with external data. 21 Forward was developed during the pandemic to provide a comprehensive, data-based explanation of how COVID-19 is currently affecting the food supply chain;
· Compile data on stock rate trends at country and regional levels to help understand whether the right amount of infant formula is available in the right place and, if not, where to go;
· Expedite necessary certification to allow flexible entry of already-licensed products into the United States from abroad;
· Simplified import review procedures for certain products from foreign factories with good inspection records;
· Exercise enforcement authority on minor labeling issues for domestic and imported products to help increase product supply as quickly as possible;
· Contact retailer stakeholder groups and ask their members to consider placing purchase limits on certain products to protect infant formula stocks for all consumers.
