The US FDA has added 11 substances to its food contact list

Between February and April 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added 11 items to its List of Active Food Contact Substance Notification(FCNs).  These include colorants in plastic food packaging, substances in polymers and coatings, and stabilizers in polyolefin polymers.

Manufacturers should draft FCN when using new food contact substances to notify FDA.  If the FDA does not respond to any safety concerns within 120 days, then the manufacturer is allowed to use or sell the substance and add that notice to the list.  According to the FDA, FCN is "valid only for listed manufacturers," so every manufacturer must submit an FCN, even if others have been already approved to use the same substance.
