On August 14, 2024, Health Canada issued a document approving the use of genetically modified corn strain DP-51291-2 for food.
In 2023, Health Canada received an application to allow the marketing of food products derived from a novel corn variety known as insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant corn DP-51291-2.
In order to determine whether this corn variety, developed through recombinant DNA technology, could be marketed as a food product in Canada, Health Canada scientists conducted a scientific assessment to ensure that it was safe to eat.
As a result of the evaluation, it was determined that the changes made to this new corn variety do not pose a greater risk to human health than the corn varieties currently on the Canadian market. In addition, Health Canada concluded that the new corn variety would have no impact on allergies and that the nutritional value of this corn variety did not differ from other traditional corn varieties available for consumption.
