On 19 September 2022, Notice F2022C00910 was published in the Commonwealth of Australia Register to amend the Australia & New Zealand Food Codex 2.6.2 (i.e., the Standard for Non-alcoholic Beverages and Brewed Soft Drinks). The main contents of the revision include:

(1) Revision of the definition of electrolyte drinks in the product classification (electrolyte drinks are drinks formulated to rapidly replenish fluids, carbohydrates, and electrolytes in people who are engaged in sustained vigorous physical activity for 60 minutes or more);

(2) Newly added special requirements for the labeling of electrolyte drinks, such as the labeling method of osmotic pressure index and the allowed and prohibited nutrition claims;

(3) The composition requirements of electrolyte drinks were revised, such as the minimum carbohydrate content requirement was revised from 50g/L to 20g/L, and the maximum fructose content was not more than 50% of the total sugar content.

The announcement will take effect from the date of publication of the government gazette.
