Egyptian exporters can export again broad beans, flour, wheat, lentils, oil and pasta without any restrictions after the Ministry of Trade and Industry lifted a six-month ban on the export of several major food products this week, Al-Ahram said.
Egyptian ban on wheat and other food exports was extended for another three months in June, following a global supply crisis triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and other factors. With 80 percent of its wheat imports dependent on Russia and Ukraine, Egypt has been trying to diversify its wheat import sources and encourage farmers to sell to the state. Egypt has already increased local supplies, with the average purchase price from local farmers at 880 EGP/ardeb (198 liters or 150 kg), which will rise to 1,000 EGP in the new season. Egypt consumes about 18m tonnes of wheat per year and the government plans to buy 6m tonnes from domestic market this year.
