On December 14, 2022, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) published the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Second Amendment Regulations. The main contents include:
(1) Cancellation of disease risk claims should specify the number of food servings the claimant consumes per day;
(2) Adjectives such as "natural" and "fresh" that appear in trademarks and brand names that may mislead consumers in food labels or advertisements need to indicate a disclaimer in a prominent position on the front of the label and package: it is just the name of the product, not reflect its true nature. Disclaimer font rules (for labels under 100 c㎡, the font size shall not exceed 1.5 mm);
(3) Revision of nutrient content regulations;
(4) The following conditions can be marked as no added sodium salt: no sodium chloride and sodium tripolyphosphate, no added sodium ingredients such as sauces, pickles, pepperoni, soy sauce, etc., no sodium sulfate ingredients;
(5) Additives are not allowed unless otherwise specified.
This Regulation shall come into force on the date of publication in the Official Gazette.
