India revised standards for non-carbonated water-based beverages

On February 1, 2023, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notification to revise the standards for non-carbonated water-based beverages (non-alcoholic). The main contents are:


(1) Non-carbonated water-based beverages (non-alcoholic) refer to beverages that contain packaged drinking water or mineral water that meet the standards stipulated in these regulations, but do not add carbon dioxide and contain specified ingredients;


(2) The ingredients allowed to be added are: sugar, liquid glucose, glucose-hydrate, invert sugar, fructose, honey, salt and salt substitutes, fruits or flowers or vegetables and their products (including extracts, herbs, spices and their products) derivatives and flavorings), may also contain caffeine;


(3) The product shall not be represented as water in any form, including product name, label or through advertising;


(4) The content of vitamins and minerals meets the standards stipulated for packaged drinking water or mineral water. (The FSSAI directive of 22 October 2021 on the addition of up to one RDA of vitamins and minerals to any standardized food listed under the FSSR does not apply to these products).
