South Africa proposed food labeling and advertising regulations

On January 31, 2023, the South African Ministry of Health issued“Announcement No. 47965", planning to formulate food labeling and advertising regulations (R2986).


Main contents:

(1) Terms and definitions;

(2) General provisions, food name, font size, place of origin, date labeling, etc.;

(3) Special regulations: list of ingredients, declaration of quantitative ingredients, allergens, irradiation, nutrition labels, etc.;

(4) Front label and claim terms; 10 appendices are attached to specify the types of additives, nutrition label declaration, font size, carbohydrate classification, herbs and spices, front label, etc.


The feedback period for this regulation is 3 months.
