US intends to approve the safe processing and importation procedures of fish and aquatic products

On January 31, 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Announcement No. 2023-02051, intending to approve the safe processing and import procedures of fish and aquatic products.


Regulations in 21CFR Part 123 require the application of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles to seafood processing.


HACCP is a hazard control system designed to help ensure food safety; processors and importers of seafood are required to collect and record relevant information, including preparing a hazard analysis and HACCP plan, undertaking and preparing records of corrective actions, reassessing the hazard analysis and HACCP plan, verify compliance of imports and prepare records of verification activities, document monitoring of critical control points, undertake and prepare records of corrective actions taken due to deviations from critical limits, maintain process monitoring instrument calibration and any periodic end product and in-process testing, maintain sanitation control records, maintain records to verify that the fish and fishery products they supply for import into the United States are processed in accordance with the sanitation regulations set forth in HACCP and Part 123, prepare new written verification procedures , to verify import compliance.

 

The public consultation is open, and the feedback period is 30 days.
