Brazil developed guidelines and verification procedures for the control of listeria monocytogenes in foods of animal origin

On 28 March 2023, the Brazilian Government Gazette issued Decree No. 763, establishing the "Guidelines and Verification Procedures for the Control of Listeria Monocytogenes in Foods of Animal Origin". 


The main contents include the scope of application (food of animal origin for human consumption, excluding honey and bee products, bivalve shellfish and commercial sterile products such as canned food), nouns and terms, automatic control procedures of animal food manufacturers, microbial criteria ( Listeria monocytogenes in low risk foods (such as foods with pH<4.4, foods with water activity <0.92, foods with pH<5 and water activity <0.94, frozen foods requiring further heating treatment, etc.) shall not exceed 100cfu/g, and shall not be detected in high-risk food (such as infant food), verification activities and operation requirements of the official competent authorities, etc. The decree shall come into force on the date of issue.
