Malaysia to amend food regulations

On 4 April 2023, the Food Safety and Quality Division of the Ministry of Health Malaysia released Consultation Draft No. 1 2023 to amend the Food Regulations 1985. Comments are solicited until 30 April 2023. The main revisions are:


1. The method of DHA nutrition claim (" DHA source ") and requirements (DHA content in food ≥40mg/100g) in the newly formulated food nutrition label;


2. Revised requirements for functional claims of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (eicosatetraenoic acid) in infant formula milk powder, That is, the original requirement of "DHA ≥17 mg and ARA≥34 mg per 100 kcal food" is revised to "DHA ≥17 mg and ARA≥25 mg per 100 kcal food";


3. To amend the allowable declaration conditions for amino acids, fatty acids and nucleotides, that is, the content of nutrients required to meet the corresponding minimum content specified in Schedule 5 of the original Ordinance instead of merely stating the amount of added nutrients.
