According to statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC), Germany imported nearly 97,000 tons of tuna worth $492 million in 2022, an increase of 19% and 23% respectively compared to the previous year. In 2021, Germany was the fourth largest importer of tuna in the European Union, after Spain, Italy, and France.
In terms of product types, canned tuna is the most imported product in Germany, accounting for 94% of this type of import. In 2022, Germany increased its imports of canned tuna and is expected to continue this trend this year. At the same time, Germany will also increase its imports of canned tuna from regions outside the European Union.
In 2022, with the increasing demand for canned tuna products certified by MSC in Germany, Papua New Guinea has the opportunity to increase its market share, while Philippine processed and canned tuna exporters are losing market share. It is worth noting that Ecuador is the largest supplier of canned tuna to the European Union market, but its export volume has decreased by 11% in the German market.
Currently, Vietnam is the sixth largest source of canned tuna imports for Germany. In 2022, the export of canned tuna from Vietnam to Germany has slightly increased, but the growth rate is not significant. Compared with 2021, Madagascar's market share of tuna in Germany is constantly increasing, with a growth rate as high as 703%.
