According to the report of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports from January to May this year were nearly US$1.9 billion, a substantial increase of 29% year-on-year. Among the top 10 export markets, China, the US, the Netherlands and Malaysia saw the strongest growth. Among them, the total amount of fruits and vegetables purchased by China from Vietnam alone reached 805 million US dollars, accounting for 59% of the total export volume.

Nguyen Dinh Tung, general manager of Vina T&T import and Export Company, said that although Vietnam has fierce competition with Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines, Vietnam's fruit exports have still achieved substantial growth. In the first four months of this year, his company's exports to the United States and Canada fell, but the Chinese market achieved a 20% increase. Among the export categories, durian, dragon fruit and bananas have seen a large increase. This year, they have signed an export contract of 1,500 containers (15 tons/container) with Chinese importers for durian alone.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary-general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, believes that fruit and vegetable exports in the second half of the year will be more optimistic. It is estimated that the total annual fruit and vegetable exports are expected to exceed 4 billion VND. He said that Vietnam's strong fruit and vegetable exports benefited from increased purchases by China and the United States, which is the largest year for China to purchase fruits such as dragon fruit, durian, mango and jackfruit since the pandemic.
