Importing more than 5,000 tons in the first half year, China becomes the largest buyer of Chile prunes again

According to Chilean media simfruit, in the first half of 2023, Chile exported 5,816 tons of prunes to China, worth $19 million, making China the largest export destination for Chilean prunes.

 

According to information provided by the Chilean Office of Agricultural Research and Policy (Odepa) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Chile exported prunes to 67 countries in the first half of this year, with a total export volume of 25,616 tons worth $104.4 million. Its second largest export destination was Germany with 3,455 tons worth $15.9 million; Mexico was the third largest destination, exporting 2,359 tons worth $8.7 million. Other major export destinations are Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, Italy and Australia.

 

Chile's prune cultivation area is 12,550 hectares, capable of producing about 100,000 tons of prunes per year, two-thirds of which is used to make prunes. According to the Chilean Prune Processing and Exporters Association (Chileprunes), after drying, the prune will be tenderized under natural conditions, and then packaged for direct retail or bulk sale according to customer requirements, the final product is diverse and of stable quality, and currently more than 70% of Chilean prunes are exported by the association.
