India has reduced tariffs on Chilean salmon imports by 15 percent, with Chilean exporters targeting India as a key sales market to boost salmon sales.
Under a trade agreement signed between India and Chile in 2006, Chile's frozen and chilled salmon and crustacean products were officially approved for tariff reduction. With this change, Chilean seafood exporters will take advantage of the tariff advantages to promote the sale of Chilean salmon in India and improve the growth opportunities of Chilean export trade.
Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Agency (Sernapesca) said India, one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population of nearly 1.408 billion and a middle class of about 264 million, is a strategic buyer with great potential for Chilean seafood.
Before India's tariff reduction, Chilean salmon enjoyed a 5 percent tariff discount in India.
