Brazil updated implementation guidelines for food nutrition labeling regulations

On July 31, 2023, the Brazilian National Health Supervision Agency (ANVISA) website released the third edition of "Guidelines for the Implementation of Food Nutrition Labeling Regulations" (also known as "Food Nutrition Labeling Regulations Questions and Answers", which is a compliance guidance document for manufacturers and distributors. , which is also a supporting document for the official regulatory agency to carry out supervision). The main contents of the update include:


1. It is stipulated that fructooligosaccharides and polydextrose should not be regarded as dietary fiber, but should be regarded as part of carbohydrates;


2. Clarify the difference between total sugar and exogenous added sugar cubes and the scope of substances included;


3. It is stipulated that for foods with added dietary fiber, the nutritional claims on sugars can only use "added exogenous sugars", and "no added sugars" or synonymous or near-synonymous claims are not allowed;


4. It is stipulated that only the total sugar content can be declared on the nutrition labels of eggs and egg products, and the amount of exogenous sugars must not be declared (because according to product definitions and standards, eggs and egg products must not be added with exogenous sugars);


5. It is supplemented that the sugar brought into food by food additives should be regarded as exogenous added sugar.


This guide takes effect from the date of publication.
