On August 24, the head of the Bureau of import and Export Food Safety of the GACC answered reporters' questions about the discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan.

The person in charge stated that the Japanese government unilaterally launched the discharge of Fukushima nuclear polluted water into the sea on August 24, ignoring strong doubts and opposition from the international community. Chinese Customs is highly concerned about the risk of radioactive contamination of Japan's food and agricultural products exported to China by Japan's move. In order to prevent radioactively contaminated Japanese food from being exported to China and protect the lives and health of the people, the General Administration of Customs has continued to carry out assessments of the risk of radioactive contamination of Japanese food, and has adopted enhanced supervision measures for food imported from Japan on the basis of strictly ensuring safety.

According to the relevant provisions of my country's laws and regulations, as well as the relevant provisions of the "Agreement on the Implementation of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures" of the World Trade Organization, the General Administration of Customs has decided to take emergency measures for aquatic products whose origin is Japan, starting from August 24, 2023 (inclusive) The import of aquatic products (including edible aquatic animals) originating in Japan is completely suspended. The General Administration of Customs will continue to pay attention to the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea in Japan, and dynamically adjust relevant regulatory measures as appropriate to prevent the risks of nuclear-contaminated water discharge to the health and food safety of our country.
