Vladimir Solodov, governor of Russia's Kamchatka region, said the region is in talks with Chinese companies about future supplies, and Kamchatka region is looking to fill a gap in the Chinese seafood market as China stops importing Japanese seafood.

China has long been Japan's largest consumer of seafood, with seafood imports worth nearly $500 million last year. In late August, however, the Chinese government banned all seafood imports from Japan in response to the discharge of wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Russia exported about 1 million tons of seafood to China in 2022, according to official estimates, and is looking to increase supplies, especially from the resource-rich Kamchatka region.

Solodov said that Chinese seafood producers and large fishing companies have shown strong interest in Russian seafood, adding that the region is in talks with Russia on future supplies.

The two sides are developing fast and efficient logistics and transportation solutions, and Chinese companies are also willing to provide necessary equipment to Russian fish processing plants and cooperate in ship maintenance.
