On 1 December 2023, the New Zealand Gazette published Notice MPI1768, "Food Notice: Requirements for Registered Food importers and imported Food for Sale", which came into effect on 27 November 2023. The main contents of the notice include:

(1) All food for sale must be imported by a registered food importer;

(2) Food importers must ensure that the food is safe and suitable;

(3) All imported food should be automatically checked at the border, and the intended use of imported food should be correctly declared;

(4) The food must comply with the labeling and composition requirements;

Food may be subject to food safety inspections at the border, and some foods that pose a greater risk to consumer and public health are known as foods of High Regulatory Interest (HRI) or foods of Increased Regulatory Interest (IRI), which require food safety clearance and monitoring for specific hazards.
