On December 6, 2023, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) issued resolution No. 829 through the Official Gazette, revising the quality and hygiene standards for edible vegetable oils. Major revisions include:

(1) Revise the definitions of virgin vegetable oil and modified vegetable oil, such as virgin vegetable oil refers to vegetable oil obtained completely through a temperature-controlled mechanical pressing process, which does not change the properties of the oil, and can be further processed by washing, decanting, centrifugation and filtration;

(2) Clarify the definition and product scope of complex edible vegetable oils, that is, products containing 2 or more oils from different plant sources, but products containing a variety of oils used only as flavoring or flavor substances do not belong to complex vegetable oils;

(3) Add that the shelf life of modified vegetable oil is 24 months;

(4) The label name of hydrogenated vegetable oil must be marked with the word "hydrogenated".

The resolution will take effect on January 2, 2024.
