The Egyptian Official Gazette announced on 14 December that the Ministry of Trade and Industry had extended the ban on the export of all types of sugar by three months until the end of March 2024, with the aim of securing domestic sugar supplies.

Sugar prices in Egypt have risen fast in recent weeks, and Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali said on 12 December that strategic sugar reserves could meet domestic consumption needs for nearly eight months. Prime Minister Madbouly called for regular reports on the market price of sugar until it stabilises at EGP 27 per kg.

According to the Egyptian National Agricultural Library, Egypt produces about 2.7 million tonnes of sugar annually from sugar cane (300,000 Feddans) and sugar beet (650,000 Feddans), while the annual demand is 3.5 million tonnes.
