According to Kenyan media reports, Kenya's Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD) has suspended the export of Hass, Pinkerton, Fuerte and Jumbo varieties of avocado by sea since 3 November last year and the ban will be lifted on 1 March. Until then, sea exports of Fuerte and Hass varieties will remain limited to 184g (commodity code 20).
Agri-Food Authority of Kenya (AFA) acting director Christine Chesaro said recent assessments have shown that farm-grown avocados are now ripe and reaching the required export volumes.
AFA-HCD sent a guide to all avocado traders on February 14, requiring all avocado exports to be inspected, and exporters must apply for inspection three days before shipment and submit a list of their marketing agents or suppliers by February 26, 2024 for traceability.
Kenyan agricultural company Kakuzi PLC has announced that it will offer free avocado ripeness testing services to smallholder farmers to ensure compliance with regulatory and market requirements. Kakuzi is one of Kenya's largest agribusinesses and was the first Kenyan company to export avocados to China.
