On 12 March 2024, the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) published a consultation paper on revised food labeling requirements, with a feedback period until 7 May 2024. The main contents are as follows:

(1) Increase the mandatory country of origin labeling product categories (micro-processed meats, such as bacon and ham, coated fish fillets or unprocessed seasoned chicken, etc.), and formulate the location, mode and size of the label display (if the origin information of the main ingredients is different from the origin information of the food itself, it must be provided in text, and the size is 75% of the origin information of the food itself, etc.);

(2) Specify the range of products subject to mandatory production labeling (unprocessed pork, chicken and eggs, certain pre-packaged and bulk micro-processed products containing pork, chicken or eggs, etc.), and classify product quality according to the method of production using 5 levels (below, in line with, above UK regulatory standards, etc.).
