The Philippine Department of Agriculture has halted imports of frozen caranx (galunggong), dessyrus and mackerel to protect aquaculture in the region.

Agriculture Minister Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the move would benefit the local aquaculture industry and prevent illegal fish importers from shifting frozen fish to avoid paying value-added tax.

David Villaluz, president of the Philippine Fish Producers Association, said reducing fish imports would allow the aquaculture industry to expand, increasing domestic fish supplies and meeting domestic market demand.
