On May 8, 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock launched the Electronic Phytosanitary Certificate (ePhyto) to promote the export of Brazilian plant products.
The document issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) will speed up and simplify the red tape in the international trade of these products. "The certificate is the passport of the commodity, which guarantees the health and safety of the product between countries." We will modernize the process, make it more efficient, no more paper documents, no more searching for stamps. As I have always said, the legacy I want to leave behind is a modern ministry, "Minister Favaro stressed. "We are trying to simplify people's lives and bring more opportunities," he said, adding that in addition to modernizing Brazil's phytosanitary certification system, the adoption of ePhyto will enhance the security and authenticity of certificates and enhance the trust of all parties involved.
"This is an initiative that demonstrates the commitment to excellence and innovation in agricultural and pastoral defence and aims to further strengthen Brazil's position on the international market," stressed Carlos Goulart, Secretary of Agricultural Defence. In addition, Goulart noted the impact of the tool on Brazilian exports. "once Brazil completes the issuance of the documents, the phytosanitary authorities at the destination will receive the information and be able to conduct a document analysis before the cargo arrives for inspection," he said. More than 70 countries already exchange certificates through the ePhyto solution, and Brazil, one of the world's largest exporters, is joining the ranks as of today. In Brazil, the information required for the issuance of e-certificates is collected from multiple systems integrated in a single foreign trade portal.
