According to media reports, on June 13, the China-Brazil High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Committee announced that the two countries have basically agreed on the text of the phytosanitary protocol for Brazilian grapes and sesame seeds to be exported to China, and that Brazilian grapes will soon be available in China. The Brazilian grape industry is waiting for the official announcement of the start of exports.
As part of the Brazilian delegation visiting China, the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Related Products (Abrafrutas) emphasized that Brazilian grapes are known for their quality and that the Chinese market has great potential, and that the opening up of the Chinese market is a great opportunity for Brazilian producers. Guilherme Coelho, President of Abrafrutas, stated. "We are optimistic about this new phase. China is a promising market and the opening to Brazilian grapes marks an important step in the expansion of our exports".
The "World Market and Trade Situation Report for Table Apples, Grapes and Pears" released by the USDA at the beginning of the year, shows that Brazil is the world's fourth-largest producer of table grapes, with production of around 1.748 million tons in the 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, and production is expected to be flat in the 2023/24 season. However, Brazil consumes more grapes domestically and exports less. In terms of varieties, in addition to Red Globe, Thompson, Crimson Red and other varieties that are also produced in large quantities in other countries, Brazil has a number of endemic varieties, such as BRS Vitória, a black seedless grape with raspberry flavor, and BRS Nubia and BRS Isis, which are balanced in terms of acidity and sweetness.
