According to The Manila Times and The Philippine Star on June 17, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) expects the Philippines to import 1.09 million tons of meat this year, up from 1.045 million tons last year, due to the extension of low tariffs on pork imports as well as an increase in demand for meat. Among them, pork imports will increase from 388,000 tons last year to 393,000 tons, beef imports will increase from 192,000 tons to 205,000 tons, the Philippines is Asia's fourth-largest pork importer.
In addition, the Philippines will increase its dairy imports to 2.49 million tons this year from 2.323 million tons last year, an increase of 7.2 percent year-on-year. This year's global poultry meat trade is expected to grow 1.5 percent to 16.312 million tons from 16.078 million tons last year, with major importers including the United States, Malaysia, Iraq, the Philippines, the European Union and South Africa.
