On July 24, 2024, the Spanish government issued a proclamation reorganizing official border controls to create a common integrated official border control system for the import and export of agricultural products.

The aim is to strengthen official controls and increase their flexibility and efficiency, thereby reducing processing times and improving the competitiveness of the Spanish agri-food and fisheries sectors. The reforms undertaken aim to improve the efficiency of the agri-food chain, guarantee the optimal allocation of its resources and public health, and advance the implementation of legislation relating to the agri-food chain.

According to an order published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the import and export of food and feed, as well as other agri-food and fishery products, will be regulated by a common integrated system. By October 1, 2024, the services for the control of animal and cargo borders will be gradually integrated within the functions of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The approved regulations guarantee uniformity of action and simplify administrative procedures for imports and exports.
