South Korea releases comments on some amendments to Food Codex
On March 30, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) issued Announcement No. 2021-134, which intends to amend some of the contents of the Food Codex. The main contents are as follows:
1.The following provisions are newly established in the general principles in the General Regulations: The definitions specified in the individual food types explain the general characteristics of the food, although the production methods, using of raw materials etc. are different from those specified in the notice due to the use of new production technologies, but if the food produced is the same as the product of a certain food type, it can be classified as that food type.
2.Modify the general standards and specifications of food: flavored foods and beverages can be produced as tablets; dry, powdered products packaged to prevent moisture absorption, and processors can indicate that products can be frozen, even if they are stored at room temperature or Refrigerated products can also be preserved and distributed through freezing.
3.Revise the standards and specifications of long-term preservation of food: barrels, bottled canned foods and retort foods that are used for circulation at room temperature for more than 12 months are applicable to the standards and specifications of long-term preservation of foods.
4.Modify the standards and specifications of various foods: divide vinegar in powder and granular forms other than liquid into vinegar types; delete the specifications for sulfate ions in salt; produce with natural products other than seawater, or mix different salt or table salt produced by a new method is classified as other salt.
5.Modify the list of food ingredients.
6.Newly set or modify 112 pesticide residue limits such as glufosinate-ammonium.
7.Modification of general test methods, etc.
