Australia updates mandatory allergen labeling requirements

On March 30, 2021, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment issued the IFN 01-21 notice, issuing the newly revised mandatory allergen labeling requirements.

On February 25, 2021, the department revised the Australia and New Zealand Food Standards Regulations and introduced new mandatory allergen labeling requirements.

The new requirements include that allergen information must be displayed in a specific format and location on food labels in simple and clear bold English terms.

To support the new requirements, the Food Standard Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) has developed a five-year implementation plan. From February 25, 2021, companies will have a three-year transition period to comply with the new requirements. During this period, importers can comply with existing declarations or new requirements. At the end of the transition period, a two-year trade period of inventory will allow packaged and labelled food to continue to be sold for up to two years before the end of the transition period.
