Australia intends to revise the composition and labeling requirements of electrolyte beverages
On May 28, 2021, the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) issued Notice No. 157-21 to solicit comments on the application for P103-Revision of the composition and labeling requirements of electrolyte beverages. The main revisions are as follows:
1. Reduce the allowable carbohydrate content in electrolyte drinks from 50 g/L to 20 g/L;
2. It is forbidden to make health claims for electrolyte beverages, including self-certified health certificates, except for three specific statements;
3. Restricted carbohydrate, sugar, energy, calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, and chlorine electrolyte beverage nutrition statement;
4. Standardize the name of "electrolyte beverage" to distinguish it from other similar beverages;
5. Modify the definition of "electrolyte beverage" to make it consistent with the revised composition, and delete the references to "carbohydrates" and "minerals" in the definition;
6. The unit of osmotic pressure will be revised to "per kilogram". The current label declaration unit requirement of "per kilogram" will be retained.
The feedback period for this notice is until July 9, 2021.
