South Korea Amends Special Law on Imported Food Safety Management

 
On August 17, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) issued a partial amendment to the "Special Law on imported Food Safety Management", the main contents of which are as follows:

1. Define "overseas direct mail food" as foods, health functional foods, and animal products that individuals directly purchase in overseas online shopping malls for their own consumption.

2. The newly established basis for non-contact investigations of overseas production enterprises and overseas factories. If the non-contact investigation is rejected, the import will be stopped and other measures will be taken.

3. Newly establish a basis for imposing fines for non-fulfilment of inspection orders for potentially harmful imported foods.

4. Provide a basis for the online publication of the hazard information of "overseas direct mail food".

5. Raise the upper limit of fines for suspension of business to 1 billion won.
