India intends to revise multiple food safety standards

 
On September 24, 2021, the Food Safety Authority of India issued CG-DL-E-23092021-229888, 229884, 229909 and other announcements, intending to amend several food standards including “Foods for Infant Nutrition”, “Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales” and “Approval for Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients”.

(1) The revision of the infant nutrition food standard shall take effect from the date of publication in the official gazette. The main revisions are as follows: after the sub-regulation (2) in regulation 7, following shall be inserted namely:

“(3) where an infant formula in powder format is manufactured without use of any vegetable oil, linoleate, vitamin E, starch, specified food additive and optional ingredients, the product may be named as ‘Infant Milk Food’.”

(2) In regulation 2.3 relating to “Prohibition and Restriction on sale of certain products”, in sub-regulation 2.3.14, in clause (11) for the words “Multi source edible vegetable oil” wherever they occur, the following shall be substituted, namely: “Multi-source edible oil”.

(3) The main amendments to the regulations on “Approval for Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients” include: re-enacting the content of the regulation (4) relating to the ‘Procedure for grant of prior approval’.
